Public Speaking 101: A Pro’s Cheat Sheet for Getting Started on Stage

I’ve spoken at 50+ high level industry events. Here’s my cheat sheet on how to start public speaking.

1. Identify your 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and topics: List 3-5 things you can talk about based on your experience.
2. Find 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 happening near you or online: Start small and work your way up
3. 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 yourself and your talk: Tell them why you’ll be a great addition to their speaker lineup. Don’t be disappointed if you don’t hear back from 60-80%.
4. Once you’re in, find out 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀: Is it paid or unpaid? Do you need to travel? How long should your talk be? Is there a dress code? PS – If an event asks you to PAY to speak, it’s not legit
5. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽 your talk: work on your content but also your delivery, your tone, your voice, your body language. Figure out if you need to memorize or if you’re good with improvising. Rehearse with people you know and don’t know. And follow me for more awesome tips on public speaking.
