One of my first clients told me something I’ll never forget:
“Nausheen – you gotta start making videos on LinkedIn!”
I’m so grateful I listened to this advice. Because as a direct result of posting videos on LinkedIn, I:
- Got approached by LinkedIn Learning and became an official instructor.
- Landed workshops at Twitch, spoke at a Femtech conference and flew to The Netherlands to do a private corporate keynote (!)
- Got pre-sold clients who say on sales calls “I feel like I know you”.
Creating videos gets you noticed. And good things happen when you get noticed and can speak to impress.
But most people stop at “I wish I could create videos but…”
You don’t need to be intimidated by the tech of creating videos. This is all you need to stop procrastinating and start creating:
- A phone (much better camera than your webcam)
- A phone stand (so your hands can be free)
- A collar mic (so you don’t pick up environment noise)
That’s all you need to get started.
3 things to start making a video
1. Lighting
Set up your phone in a spot with good natural lighting in front of you, not behind you. If you like, you can balance out shadows with a ring light.
2. Angle and framing
Keep your phone at eye level and set a frame that shows your head and torso.
3. Your script and delivery
This is the part that takes a few tries to get right.
For your script – aim to have bullet points instead of full-on sentences. Keep one video to one idea. And please don’t read out your script when recording your video!
Btw, there’s also a tool you can use to have your notes in front of you while still being able to look into the camera and record – it’s called a teleprompter. This might make life a lot easier for you as it’ll remove the pressure of having to remember your points.
I recommend the Elgato teleprompter – check it out here*.
For your delivery – aim to bring high energy, enunciate clearly and use your body language. (This is the trickiest part to give advice on as impactful delivery takes a few months to master- and this is at the heart of my coaching programs which last that long).
When do you start?
This should get you started making videos.
They will not be perfect, but they will be good enough for you to start prototyping and refining.
Take it from someone who waited for DECADES before starting to be more visible on LinkedIn – it will absolutely pay off. You can build an entire business on your personal brand – but you need to stop being invisible first.
