Whether you’re planning on talking to your boss or working on an investor pitch, misunderstandings can be detrimental. Okay, maybe I’m being a bit dramatic. You can likely clarify if you’ve been misunderstood. However, the real problem arises when you don’t even realize that you’ve been misunderstood.

Here are 3 ways to communicate so that you’re NEVER misunderstood again:

✅ Do check for all assumptions. You’d be surprised at how many things we assume. “They probably already know this.” “I’m just stating the obvious.” But do they really know? Is it truly obvious to everyone? When in doubt, explain. It’s better to briefly touch on a topic than to leave room for assumptions. For instance, discuss the process that entails automating XYZ so that ABC can directly enhance X.

✅ Do use simple words and logic. It might seem straightforward, but many of us complicate our language, especially when presenting or pitching. While it might be natural to write in a complex manner, when speaking, it’s essential to be clear rather than clever. Aim for clarity, use common words, and avoid jargon.

✅ Do work on your tone. It’s a well-known adage: People might forget what you said, but they’ll remember how you made them feel. Your tone plays a significant role in this. Avoid talking down to people. If you’re uncertain about your audience, strike a balance. Be as friendly as you would be with your neighbor Sally, but avoid being overly familiar, like you might be with Cousin Joe. When presenting, envision yourself as a bridge between your knowledge and what you want your audience to understand. Construct that bridge with straightforward words and clear logic.
