Why do confident leaders freeze when speaking on camera?
Here are 3 reasons based on 7 years of coaching experience:
𝟭. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆.
You think everyone will be able to look it up months or years later.
What you record will reach an audience that you’ll never see.
You can’t judge how they’ll react.
You can’t be there to explain yourself.
It’s scary because it’s letting go of control.
𝟮. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁.
We ALL see the worst faults in our own faces, bodies and speaking mannerisms.
I once spent an entire afternoon figuring out how to photoshop an errant bra strap out of my video.
I get it.
You want to be perfect.
Strive for perfection.
But be ok with the imperfections after you’ve tried your best.
𝟯. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝘁.
You can’t relate it to the communication skills you already know, like presenting live, or 1:1 conversations.
So as a result you see a pale reflection of who you really are when you see a recorded version of yourself.
“Is that what I really sound like?”
Because you hated seeing yourself on video that one time…you hate the idea of trying again.
How do you become more of YOURSELF when you talk on camera?
I share this in my newsletter today.
